really?

“A threat has been detected. Please walk to the nearest stairway. Do not take the elevator.” There was a voice in my apartment, repeating itself. I ran to the hallway and smelled a chemical odor, but couldn’t place it. What would you grab?

I grabbed my iPad (aka, all my notes) and my laptop. Because goddamn it, I’m not taking the makeup exam. I am taking that biochem exam tomorrow whether the apartment complex burns down or not. I also grabbed my boyfriend’s passport- not my passport, just his. Because getting another American passport won’t be a problem, but if he loses all his visas it’s going to be quite the pain in the ass to get them from Colombia and the US.

I’d like to note that in my moment of panic, I didn’t even try to pack a suitcase of my favorite clothes even though I got a little teary eyed about losing all my worldly possessions. After running down 15 flights of stairs, we were informed there was no emergency. Just a faulty heating system that set off the fire alarms. So I’m back, finishing my dinner, and the alarm is going off again.

I had planned on getting 8 hours of sleep before the exam tomorrow… let’s see how this goes.

*Of note, there was an actual fire in the apartment complex a few months ago. Walking down a few flights of stairs through a cloud of smoke makes a you a bit faster at responding to those fire alarms.
