Sometimes I get tired of sitting on my butt all day studying. But then I read the New York Times the next morning and see this: FDA Approves Genetic Drug to Treat Rare Disease. This is the first drug approved for antisense technology, targeting the mRNA and destroying it, for apolipoprotein B to lower LDL levels in those with homozygous familial hypercholesterolemia.
I just took an exam in biochemistry in which I had to memorize all those apolipoproteins (“what’s the point?”) and this morning I understood the science behind this drug and knew exactly which disease the article was referencing. It feels great to learn something and apply it to real life.
I also get really excited about mRNA, biochem, and molecular anything. Who am I?
Isn’t that the best feeling, when you realize that all of the theoretical gobbledy-gook you learn in class actually shows up in the real world?
I feel like Pinocchio when he turned into a real boy.
Yuk! They took all that stuff out of our curriculum so my only bcem knowledge is remnant from my original undergrad degree! Good thing I have a research background otherwise is be lost on what you’re talking about! But, like Allie said, it’s great to feel like all your hard work is worth something!
It is really great to feel like it’s paying off- even when I’m not in a hospital! I’m a little jealous they’re not making you do biochem. I thought my minor in it was going to carry me, but it’s not!
Another big fan of the molecular world salutes you. And the new drug is darn spiffy!
